Chaotic scenes unfolded in Los Cabos in the aftermath of Hurricane Odile as looters stripped local supermarkets bare, desperate for food and supplies as swathes of Mexico's Baja California Sur remain without water and electricity days after the storm hit.

In survival mode, locals lugged what they could, filling up trolleys and loading up pick-up trucks after one of the worst storms to ever hit Los Cabos, smashing shop windows, downing power lines and uprooting trees.

At least 26,000 foreign tourists and 4,000 Mexicans were estimated to be in the region when Odile hit, officials reported.

The storm, with sustained winds of 70 miles per hour (113 km per hour), shut down San Jose del Cabos' international airport as well as the La Paz airport about 100 miles (161 km) to the north.

Around 135 people required hospital treatment due to Odile, most for minor injuries, said Luis Felipe Puente, head of national emergency services. No deaths were reported.
