Percy Fernandez, the mayor of Santa Cruz, Bolivia is under some serious scrutiny.
It seems sexual harassment by politicians knows no bounds. In a yet another example of what some are calling the “arrogance of power”, Percy Fernandez, the mayor of Santa Cruz, Bolivia is under some serious scrutiny. On April 30th, the 75-year-old Fernandez was filmed essentially groping a woman.
During an event, Mercedes Guzman, who works as a journalist sat down in an assigned seat next to Fernandez. Right away, the mayor placed his hand on her thigh. She put her hand on top of his and struggled to pry it off and place his hand back in his own lap.
This isn’t the first time he was caught behaving inappropriately with females either.
In 2012, he was seen touching the behind of the city council’s president during an event. Two years prior to that, he forced a kiss on a female engineer during an inspection.
Each of those three times, he was caught on camera leading many to refer to him as the ‘hands-on mayor’. It was the most recent encounter with Guzman that has attracted the most attention though.
Since citizens have made their outrage known, Fernandez issued an apology to Guzman stating “I'm worried that I might've disrespected you while you were performing your duties. I apologize again to you and your dignified family.”
An opposition politician recently filed a complaint against Fernandez, accusing him of sexual violence, sexual harassment and discrimination.
