Russia has failed to hold up its end of a deal reached in Geneva that was supposed to lead to the de-escalation of the crisis in Ukraine, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Tuesday (May 6).
"We have been -- it is fair to say -- nothing less than disappointed to see Russia fail to live up to the very plain and simple easy to interpret commitments made in Geneva," Kerry said at a news conference alongside European Union Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton.
The crisis in Ukraine has worsened in recent days with frequent clashes in eastern cities like Odessa and Slaviansk, where pro-Russian separatists remain in control of numerous government buildings and have clashed with Ukrainian special forces, leaving dozens dead.
Ukraine is preparing to hold national elections on May 25, but cities like Luhansk and Donetsk are scheduled to hold regional referendums, which Kerry says "will create more problems."
