Two Florida men may have earned a record for land based fishing after reeling in an over 800-pound, 11 foot long shark.

Joey Polk from Milton, Florida may have earned a record for land based shark fishing after reeling in an over 800-pound, 11 foot long shark. Ironically the previous record was set by his cousin Ernie Polk, who was there to help Joey with his catch.

For about an hour, Joey battled with the incredibly fast and strong shark from the shores of the Gulf of Mexico.

After successfully tugging in the shark, Joey remarked “She was pulling line out of my reel at easily 60 miles and hour…. When I saw it, I knew it was a big fish. I've been fishing since I was a little kid, but I thought it was maybe 700 pounds or so, then when we weighed it, it came in at 805! It was amazing."

The cousins reportedly spend quite a bit of time fishing together. Typically, the men tag and release their catches back in the water, but the Mako shark was far too worn out from the struggle and couldn’t swim.

The cousins placed the shark in the back of a pickup and drove off with it. They then went home, cooked the shark and served it to members of their community.

The men refuse to reveal the exact location where they caught the shark, fearing competing fishermen and tourists may invade their lucky spot.
