Did you know that up until now, no case against the United States Department of Homeland Security has ever gone to trial? Until this week that is.
In 2005 Dr Rahinah Ibrahim was trying to get back to Stanford University to complete her research but her visa was revoked mysteriously with no due process, She hasn't been able to return to the U.S. since, even though she had lived legally in the U.S. for many years, had met and married her husband in the U.S., and one of her children was born in and is a U.S. citizen.
Her daughter Raihan was due to testify in the court case herself this week but was unable to board her flight because DHS issued a travel warning against her. Thinking she might be suffering the same fate as her mother did 8 years ago, she phoned her mother's lawyer in San Francisco. Attorneys for the DHS said "the plaintiff's daughter just missed her flight", however Raihan was able to secure the actual no-fly document that airlines usually are told to keep from the targeted passengers.
"We may have to have a separate evidentiary hearing about this," Judge Alsup said, and ordered the defendants to provide further information tomorrow (Tuesday). "I want to know whether the government did something to obstruct a witness, a U.S. citizen."
Needless to say, this case is opening up a can of worms, and finally shedding light on one of the US Government's most secretive agencies.
