A Winter Haven, Florida family of four used at least two guns to shoot and kill a burglar who ignored warnings not to enter their home early Monday morning.
Luis Pena and his wife, Bacenbina, along with their son and daughter were fast asleep when a burglar tried to enter their house via the back porch french doors. At around 7 a.m., Luis, his wife and their son awoke to sounds from the back porch. The three went down to the kitchen and Luis shouted at the burglar not to come inside. He next fired a warning shot, but the burglar continued inside undeterred.
Multiple shots were fired after the thief broke through the door, and the suspect was hit by at least one of the bullets. Exactly who fired and how many shots were fired is still under investigation, but police have confirmed that at least two weapons were discharged. When police arrived at the scene, the burglar was found dead inside the home.
Police identified the deceased as 40-year-old Mitchell Large, who lived just a mile away from the Penas. Large had a criminal history that included assault and domestic violence charges.
Authorities said the Pena family is not likely to face charges as they acted in clear self-defense.
