A five-story building under construction collapsed in a suburb of Sao Paulo, Brazil on Monday (December 2).

The building, which was close to completion, collapsed at 7:30pm. Intended for commercial purposes, it was located in Guarulhos, outside Sao Paulo — Brazil's business capital and most populous city.

No casualties have been reported, and most workers who had been working on the project had left the building before the collapse, which resulted from a structural fault. Local media, however, cited unconfirmed reports which said there were some workers still in the building when it collapsed.

More than 70 firefighters arrived at the scene to search for survivors. No survivors were found during the initial search, though the fire department said on twitter that it is still looking for a person who might be trapped under the debris.

A nearby building was evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Two workers were killed when a crane collapsed on November 27 at Arena Corinthians, a Sao Paulo stadium that is scheduled to host the opening game of the 2014 World Cup. Last August 10 people died in another building collapse in Sao Paulo.
