A 22-year-old man died in Philadelphia after a fourth-floor balcony he was standing on gave way and collapsed. Two women who were also on the balcony at the time were seriously injured in the collapse.
The incident occurred Saturday (January 11) evening after three individuals at a birthday party taking place at the historic John C. Bell building, decided to step out on to a balcony to smoke cigarettes.
As the three were standing on the balcony, the structure gave way and collapsed. The man and two women fell four stories; the man suffered severe neck and head injuries and died several hours after arriving at Hahnemann University Hospital while the two women were also transported to hospital and are reportedly in stable condition with broken bones in their backs. No names have been released pending the notification of families.
The three young people involved in the accident were attending a birthday party in the historic John C. Bell apartment building. It's not yet known if the age of the building, which is 108 years old, contributed to the collapse and Philadelphia Fire Department officials say they will launch an investigation together with the city's Department of Licenses and Inspections.
The Rittenhouse Square area of Philadelphia is home to luxury high rise apartment buildings but is also of the oldest sections of the city. The John C. Bell building was constructed in 1906 and is named after a former Pennsylvania attorney general who once lived there. The edifice was converted into use as an apartment building in 1944.
