Eight teenage boys were feared drowned in Malaysia on Friday (February 21), after five of the boys tried to rescue three boys from drowning in a river.

Thirteen teenagers aged 13 to 16, including one girl and two brothers, went for a jog along the Buluh Kasap River in Segamat District on Friday morning, which was a holiday in Johor.

In an interview with the New Straits Times, Mohd Aizat Mamat, senior assistant superintendent of the Johor Fire and Rescue Department's diving team, said three boys decided to go for a swim in the river by a private sand quarry. They soon struggled in the water, and five of their friends jumped into the water to rescue them.

Mohd Aizat said officers were alerted by one of the teenagers. By 4:22 p.m., authorities have retrieved three bodies, those of Mohd Hafizul Danial Nor Hasyim, Mohd Zakri Zaidi and Nazrul Aminuddin Zamri. A total of 40 rescuers, including 15 divers, have been dispatched to search for the missing teens.

The Buluh Kasap riverside is a popular recreational spot among local residents. The river is 20 metres deep and filled with slime and wood detritus.
