Three people are missing, feared dead after a fire ripped through a youth home in eastern Sweden early on Tuesday morning.

The fire broke out in a three-storey building in the town of Norrtäljegatan that houses young people with special needs.

According to local reports, nine people were inside the building when the fire broke out at 12 minutes past midnight, triggering a fire alarm.

Fire crews took 20 minutes to arrive at the scene as the local crew were attending to a drowning incident nearby meaning a reserve team had to be called out from the nearby town of Rimbo.

A total of eleven people were taken to hospital including nine residents and a member of staff.

The missing resident and the rapid spread of the fire had led the fire authorities to speculate that the fire may have been a result of arson.

Authorities said that an investigation into the cause of the fire would get underway as soon as the debris had cooled down enough to start work.

The residence was constructed in 1918 and included three floors and a basement.

The building underwent its most recent fire safety inspection in december 2012, according to local press reports.
