Italian police announced on Tuesday (February 11) that they had arrested twenty six people from two mafia crime families who were allegedly conspiring to smuggle large amount of weapons and illegal drugs from South America into Italy, according to a report by Reuters.

Eight suspects were arrested in New York. According to local reports, the suspects are linked to the Gambino crime family, which is believed to have negotiated the deal.
The other 18 suspects were arrested in Italy and are reportedly associated with the Ndrangheta clan.

The raid, a joint operation by Italian police and the FBI dubbed "New Bridge", prevented the delivery from Guyana to Italy of hundreds of kilograms of cocaine dissolved in coconuts and cans of pineapples.

The southern Italian city of Gioia Tauro, the intended destination of the drugs, is one of Europe's largest shipping ports.
The suspects were accused of trafficking international drugs and weapons and money laundering.

According to an FBI agent quoted by CBS News, the arrests are not likely to put an end to the Italian-US drug trade, but "they'll certainly have a significant impact."

Ndrangheta, the Calabrian version of the Sicilian mafia, is considered one of the most powerful criminal organizations in the international drug trade.
