The Akita Narayama Post Office called police after receiving a suspicious package thought to be a letter bomb Thursday afternoon.

A paper bag was left in the front door of the post office. A pedestrian saw it, thinking someone lost it and took it to the post office. A mail clerk found an unidentified object wrapped in plastic and a letter to the postmaster. The letter demanded US$40,0000 in cash and threatened to blow up the building. The postmaster alerted police, who evacuated residents and set up a 50-meter no-go zone around the post office. The bomb disposal team was called in. They discovered that the bomb was a fake filled with batteries and lead. The mailbox in front of the post office was damaged too. Police are investigating if the two incidents are related.
