Pawan Kumar Bansal, the former Railway Minister and Chandigarh parliament member, reported to police that his Facebook page had experienced a suspicious surge in likes. On December 24th, he had about 51 thousand, but when the page was checked on the 25th that number had shot up to over 62 thousand.

Most of the times it's a good thing when someone gets lots of likes on Facebook. However one politician in India didn't think that at all.

Pawan Kumar Bansal, the former Railway Minister and Chandigarh parliament member, reported to police that his Facebook page had experienced a suspicious surge in likes.

On December 24th, he had about 51 thousand, but when the page was checked on the 25th that number had shot up to over 62 thousand.

In the complaint filed with authorities, Bansal said, "This increase happened in just one day and it shows that somebody is doing so without my knowledge and for some ulterior purpose."

His skepticism that the sudden rise in popularity is nefarious in nature is based on several surrounding circumstances.

One is that he typically gets 10 to 20 likes a day, with the historical maximum being in the arena of 100.

Another is that his Facebook account has been hacked in the past.

Both of those factors are compounded by the fact that other officials have likewise experienced odd and sometimes controversial surges of followers recently.
