Consonants such as P, B, T or D are considered as plosives (ex-plosives). Pop filters basically work as a screen to break down those blasts of air just before they hit the microphone. They are clamped into the microphone stand NEVER on the microphone itself in order to reduce the likelihood of the pop filter taking in noises when the microphone is tapped or shifted.
