Consonants such as P, B, T or D are considered as plosives (ex-plosives). Pop filters basically perform as a screen to dissolve those blasts of air before they hit the microphone. They are clamped into the microphone stand NOT on the microphone itself so as to minimize the chance of the pop filter taking in perturbations when the mic is tapped or shifted.
