At least 13 people died on a highway in central Bolivia on Monday (September 23) when a van was buried by mudslide that also caused a bus to fall off the road and plunge into a ravine in a sector known as Puente Leon. At least 26 others in both vehicles were injured

It was reported that the incident occurred on Monday afternoon on a highway linking the capital with the city of Caranavi, about 200 km from La Paz. The bus was pushed about 40 meters down into a deep ditch and the van, built for 12 passengers, was buried in mud.

According to reports, the injured have been taken to nearby hospitals in Caranavi and Coroico. The number of victims could rise as rescue work continued on Tuesday. It was reported that heavy rain had deluged the subtropical zone in recent days.

According to reports, on average road accidents in Bolivia result in about 1,000 deaths and 40,000 injuries per year.
