A fire on a train killed at least 23 people in Andhra Pradesh state in southern India on Saturday (December 28).

The train was on its way from the city of Bangalore to Nanded. It was carrying 67 passengers on board. An air-conditioned coach suddenly caught fire at about 3:15 a.m.

According to Hindustan Times, passengers were sleeping when somebody noticed the smoke and then pulled the emergency chain to stop the train. Some 40 passengers managed to escape the coach that caught fire in early hours.

Most passengers seemed to have choked to death in the smoke. Two children were among the fatalities.

Indian authorities said a short circuit could have caused the fire. They will conduct an inquiry to reveal the exact cause of the fire.
