A company is proposing to build a $US1 billion tidal power plant in Swansea Bay in Wales.

The project will create a 750-meter-long lagoon-shaped seawall in Swansea Bay. Up to 26 low-head bulb turbines will be installed inside concrete turbine housings that are permanently submerged. The technology makes use of the difference in water levels between the sea and the water inside the lagoon created by tides. Each turbine is equipped with sluice gates that will remain closed until the water level on either side is high enough to pass through and generate electricity. Hence, the process can be operated on flood tides as well as ebb tides. It is estimated that the lagoon could provide enough electricity for around 120,000 homes.
