New research out of the UK shows that men are 70 percent more likely to die from a skin melanoma than women.

The huge difference in numbers is attributed to a combination of procrastination and biology.

Researchers found that men tend to be diagnosed with skin cancer when they’re at a more advanced stage.

Part of that is not seeing a doctor when symptoms present, but there are also factors beyond individual control that contribute to the late discoveries.

One is that men develop trouble areas on their backs while women’s melanomas more often occur in easier to spot areas like the arms and legs.

It’s also believed that women simply have stronger immune systems. Based on studies between pre- and post-menopausal women, the system’s strength is considered to be a key player in the progression rate of the cancer.

Also, German scientists have identified a gene that could eventually explain the more severe cases that occur among men.

Much of the research is yet to be done, however, and in the meantime doctors advise being vigilant about prevention.

Sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, and getting regular check-ups are all suggested.
