Firefighters put out the flames after Buddhist mobs armed with sticks and machetes burned Muslim homes for a second day in a row in northern Myanmar.

At least one person was killed and four were wounded in fighting that began in the afternoon.

Shops were ripped apart in the violence, leaving some residents in shock about what has happened in their hometown.

"We had no real problems before -- we only had small problems. I feel very sad because of this. Many people are suffering now because of one or two people."

State television reported violence erupted on Tuesday -- after Buddhists heard reports of a Muslim man setting a Buddhist woman on fire.

State media also reported that calm had restored on Wednesday.

Myanmar has struggled with religious unrest since last June when fighting erupted between Buddhists and Muslims in the western part of the country.
