Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has declared a state of emergency in several northeastern states to clamp down on an increasingly violent Islamist insurgency.

The troops and other security agencies involved in these operations have orders to take all necessary action, within the ambit of their rules of engagement, to put an end to the impunity of insurgents and terrorists.

Earlier this month, suspected members of the Islamist sect Boko Haram killed 55 police and security officials during a jail break in which they freed more than 100 prisoners.

The military's handling of the uprising, which began in 2009, has long been criticised for it's heavy handed tactics against the Boko Haram.
