Justin Bieber appears to have given up on his pet monkey.

The 19-year-old singer has until May 17th to hand in the necessary paperwork to retrieve his capuchin monkey, which was seized at a German airport during a concert stop.

But the head of the Munich animal shelter, Karl Heinz, said Bieber's team has made it clear they will not be picking up the monkey, named Mally.

SOUNDBITE: Karl Heinz, head of Munich animal shelter, saying (German):

"His management got in touch with me. I was then on holiday for two weeks and that's when the second email arrived where they told me that they are trying to find him a place in Germany where he can stay, meaning Justin Bieber will not take him back. I think this is the most sensible thing because a monkey does not belong on any tours and should be with other members of its own species with which it can grow up."

Mally is expected to be transferred from the shelter to a zoo to learn to get along with other monkeys.
