The French Senate has voted to legalise same-sex marriage, which is now on track to become law become by summer.

The vote put forward by the Socialists of President Francois Hollande got through despite strong opposition from conservatives, notably Roman Catholics.

The bill will permit gay marriage and allow same-sex couples to adopt children.
