"Help" etched in sand leads to a rescue.

We have all seen clever survival tricks in movies; on occasion, they can also work in real life.

Etchings in the sand recently led to the successful rescue of a missing woman.

Emergency crews located 68-year-old Lynette Joyce Bond, who was airlifted to safety by a police helicopter after authorities saw her simple note which was written in the sand stating “help” in the Snowy River National Park.

Search-and-rescue officers along with volunteers began scouring the area after a walker noticed Bond’s abandoned car on a trail with an attached note claiming that the vehicle had broken down. The air crew noticed the message along with a woman lying on the ground waving a stick and making snow angel movements.

In 2011, two women in Hawaii were rescued from a remote beach after etching “S.O.S” in the sand. A NAVY aircrew had been alerted of the message while training in a nearby area.

A helicopter along with a search-and-rescue swimmer were dispatched to save the ladies, one of whom was injured. Both were taken to the hospital for treatment.
