James Brown. A clip from the documentary, "The Night James Brown Saved Boston", features Interviews on the Boston Mayoral Race between Mrs. Louise Day Hicks who was anti-Black and Kevin White was a progressive candidate. Kevin White won by 12,000 votes.

Video transcript:

Narrator: The mayoral campaign in 1967 hitting progressive candidate Kevin White against the working class anti-busing candidate Louise Day Hicks. The heart of the fight, school integration.

Female Speaker: Many of the Negro parents believe that if predominantly Negro school is inferior per se that we here in Boston do not believe that premise.

Kevin White: The battle basically in the election came down to Mrs. Hicks saying you know where I stand which was a cold word for saying I am anti black.

Richard Flavin: She was a person who was for the status quo, who was for the way things always had been and things were changing.

I used to kid and say if Mrs. Hicks look like Grace Kelly should have beaten me. She was not an attractive candidate. I don't remember it's a derogatory such but not attractive candidate yet she came within 12,000 votes of winning.

Mrs. Hicks: I wish you the very best and a successful regime as mayor of the City of Boston.
