Cornered after their prominent leaders are being tried for war crimes of the 1971 liberation war, Bangladesh's largest Islamic party, the Jamaat e Islami got support from 15 Islamic outfits in India’s West Bengal state. This drew criticism from many outside the state who felt that the local administration was muddying waters for India's foreign policy by allowing such demonstrations because just a few weeks ago the Indian National Security Advisor had praised the Shahbag protests. On the other hand, holding peaceful demonstrations are part of democratic ways of protest in India so stopping the rally was not an option.
