Peru squatters forced out

Peruvian police move in to evict an estimated 2,000 squatters from land some say they've occupied for decades.

Officers went in hard.

Mounted and armed police swept through the area near the town of Chivay.

Those unable to flee were arrested.

SOUNDBITE: UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN SAYING (Spanish):

"For over 30 years this has been abandoned and now a woman claims it and says she is the owner."

SOUNDBITE: UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN SAYING (Spanish):

"My son was almost killed because a tear gas bomb fell on my patio."

The evictions came after a woman, reported to be the landowner, said the squatters had changed their conditions in the middle of negotiations.
