New Coalition Government in Israel Ends Months of Wrangling

After nearly two months of political horse-trading, Israel finally emerges with a new coalition government.

On March 15th, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu presented the composition of the government to the President.

Four parties will form the new coalition, including some that don't see always see eye-to-eye.

One of the surprises of the drawn-out negotiations is the firm alliance between ultra-right-wing Habeit-Hayehudi and the moderate centrist Yesh Atid. This is despite major differences between them on the Palestinian issue.

Bringing them together was a common stand on deferring the mandatory military service of ultra-Orthodox Jewish seminary students. In fact, this proved to be one of the harder points during the protracted negotiations.

The problematic issue forced Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party, which came in first in the election with just over 30% support, to break with long-time religious party allies in shaping the ultimate coalition.

One of the first challenges ahead of the new coalition will be to host Barack Obama's upcoming visit to the Middle East.
