David Hasselhoff used his popularity among Germans to highlight a campaign to prevent local developers from tearing down part of the remains of the Berlin Wall.
The artist nicknamed "The Hoff" became iconic in Germany back in 1989 when his song "Looking for Freedom" became part of the soundtrack for the fall of the wall and the reunification of the country.
SOUNDBITE (English) David Hasselhoff:
"It was a big surprise to me when they called and asked if I could sing on New Year's Eve and I said, only if I can sing on the Wall, knowing they would say no. And they said we need to get (then West German Chancellor)
Helmut Kohl and (East German leader Erich) Honecker to say yes. Both chancellors had to say yes. They called back two days later and they said yes."
The star, best known for either donning red swimming shorts in Baywatch or driving a talking car in Knight Rider, remains quite modest about the effect he's had over the German nation.
