North Korea and South Korea hold duelling rallies as tension builds

At a mass rally in North Korea's Southern Hamgyong Province, a North Korean General had a stark warning for the country's sworn enemies.

(SOUNDBITE) (Korean) NORTH KOREAN MILITARY GENERAL ROH YONG-MUN SAYING:

"The U.S. imperialists and their puppet war-mongers should clearly realise who they are dealing with and what kind of destiny of destruction is waiting for them."

Tensions on the Korean peninsula have risen since the North conducted a third nuclear test on Feb. 12, prompting new U.N. sanctions.

South Korea and U.S. forces are conducting large-scale military drills until the end of April.

North Korea has accused the United States of using the exercises as a launch pad for a nuclear war and has declared void the armistice that ended hostilities in the Korean War.

In Seoul, anti-war activists protested the drills, laying on the ground mimicking casualties of war and calling for peace talks.
