A multi-party talk began today over Iran’s nuclear program. China and the other four permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, as well as Germany, sat down with Iranian diplomats in in Almaty city in Kazakhstan.

There is little prospect for groundbreaking results at the talks. China’s Foreign Ministry today called on the parties to resolve the issue through negotiations. The United States is also pushing for diplomatic dialogue, but has not ruled out military intervention to stop Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.

The top powers are expected to offer Iran limited sanctions relief if it agrees to halt its most sensitive nuclear work.

Last week, a U.N. nuclear watchdog reported that Iran was installing advanced centrifuges at its main uranium plant. This would speed up Iran’s uranium enrichment, and can be used for both civilian and military purposes.
