Laying the dead to rest, but UNREST continues in Tunisia.

Tens of thousands of mourners turned out Friday for the funeral of secular opposition leader Chokri Belaid, whose assassination has thrown the country into political turmoil.

It was Tunisia's biggest funeral since the death of the nation's independence leader, in 2000.

Crowds marched towards the burial ground in Belaid's home district of Jebel al-Jaloud, many chanting anti-Islamist and anti-government slogans.

But violence erupted near the cemetery as police fired teargas into demonstrators who threw stones and set cars on fire.

Police also used teargas against protesters near the Interior Ministry, a flashpoint for clashes, arresting 150 people.

As the violence spilled into the burial ground the 48 year old Belaid was laid to rest.

No one has claimed responsibility for his killing but some blame the leader of the ruling Islamist party.

Belaid's assassination has shocked Tunisia, the cradle of the Arab uprisings which until now had a mostly peaceful political transition.
