Biden: Gun violence task force will present to Obama next week

Meeting with leaders of hunting and outdoor sporting groups, Vice President Joe Biden said his task force to reduce gun violence will make its recommendations to the president by next Tuesday.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) VICE PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN, SAYING:

"It's a real very tight window to do this."

Biden's task force is likely to recommend background checks for all gun buyers - and a ban on high-capacity ammunition clips.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) VICE PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN, SAYING:

"There is a surprising, so far, a surprising recurrence of suggestions that we have universal background checks. Not just close the gun show loophole, but total universal background checks including private sales."

Biden - who later met with members of the National Rifle Association on Thursday - wants to reach consensus on a plan quickly - while the mood on Capitol Hill is for action after the deadly school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, last month.

In a statement released after their meeting, the NRA criticized the White House - for efforts to try to limit gun rights.
