South African women are drinking to harm infants.

New mothers usually change their lifestyle habits for the better, in preparation for their newborn.

However, according to a BBC report, some pregnant women in South Africa's Eastern Cape region are purposely drinking in order to damage their babies so they can claim disability benefits.

Life is not easy, especially for mothers living in Eastern Cape, one of the poorest areas in South Africa where unemployment as well as crime rate is high.

When a baby is born with a disability, the government provides nearly $140 per month to the family.
As a result, Eastern Cape has seen a boom in the numbers of children born with disabilities.
Pregnant mothers who drink heavily have a higher chance of having a baby born with Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder which results in physical deformities, speech problems and behavioral issues.

The Eastern Cape Liquor Board is launching a program to educate mothers on the effects of drinking while pregnant.

What do you think can be done to stop these pregnant women from engaging in such actions?
