New England was covered in a thick blanket of snow on Sunday after a winter storm dumped up to 30 centimetres of snow across the northeastern United States.

Residents of Rhode Island spent the day outside, shovelling snow from steps and blowing it from driveways.

At the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, home to the New England Patriots, volunteer crews helped clear the snow, which started falling on Saturday afternoon.

The national weather service had also issued winter storm warnings for parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York.

Police reported dozens of accidents, mostly involving cars slipping off snowy roads.
