Peru's northern coastline is increasingly being battered by storms and other extreme weather linked to climate change. Together with a local financial institution, the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) has set up an insurance system that helps compensate farmers in the case of damage. Valentin Ruiz, the chairman of the Cooperative of Banana Producers in the region, is worried by the effects that storms and flooding have on the banana crop. To protect banana producers from the effects of El Niño, he and his members have collected money for dams and levees.
