Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra visited the location of a $50B joint development project between Thailand and Myanmar on Monday. Located in Dawei the 100 square mile site will, according to Reuters, include a deep-sea port, steel mills, refineries, a petrochemical complex and power plants.
According to the Thai government’s website Shinawatra will meet with Myanmar President Thein Sein and will be briefed on the status of the project. They will discuss issues such as encouraging investment in the area. Complete details are expected in February 2013.
The Thai government has expressed support for the Dawei project, insisting the development will benefit the entire region. According to Reuters the coastal Dawei is an ideal location for Thailand’s heavy industry.
