Japan's Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda has stepped down after conceding defeat in parliamentary elections.

Projections show the conservative Liberal Democrats won more than two-thirds of seats in the lower house.

Former Prime Minister Shizo Abe is widely expected to take over as leader.
