Crowds walked down Oslo's main street on Monday (December 10) in a torch light parade to honour the Nobel Peace Prize winner - the European Union.

The 55-year-old organization was awarded the prize for helping to transform Europe "from a continent of wars to a continent of peace" in the decades since World War Two.

According to Norwegian media, around 2,000 people took part in the parade that ended outside the Grand Hotel, where the people representing the European Union waved from a balcony.

Appropriately for a set of institutions with no single leader, the EU sent three of its presidents to collect the award, and all three came out on the balcony to wave at the crowd.

They were Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council, Jose Manuel Barroso, President of the EU's executive European Commission and Martin Schulz, President of the elected European Parliament.
