Bisnar | Chase is proud to announce that Brian Chase and Scott Ritsema are the 2012 Consumer Attorneys of the Year.
Jaklin Romine was properly seatbelted when the pickup she was driving was stopped at an intersection waiting to make a left turn. A vehicle rear-ended the car behind Romine, which in turn rear-ended her truck. As her body moved backwards toward the impact, her seat collapsed rearward and she was thrown into the back seat, breaking her neck and leaving her an incomplete quadriplegic. Attorneys Brian Chase and Scott Ritsema presented evidence that the seat, designed by Johnson Controls, was too weak to withstand foreseeable rear impacts, thus subjecting occupants to catastrophic risks. They also showed the company had been well aware of the dangers and risks of weak seats since the 1990s. Johnson Controls had actually developed a design that was more structurally sound to prevent seats from collapsing in accidents such as this but chose to put profits ahead of people. The attorneys arranged for a number of crash tests that debunked the defense that the seats were designed to absorb energy in a rear-end accident. A jury found Johnson Controls liable for Romine's injuries and awarded her a substantial verdict.
