Israel's former foreign minister Tzipi Livni makes her re-entry to politics.

Livni on Tuesday announced she is forming a new party to contest January's general elections.

Although polls predict her Hat'nua party may win less than 10 seats in the 120-member parliament, it is likely to further divide the centre-left as it tries to compete against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party.

"My decision is to go back to politics and to form another party that would be the alternative for this government, for the Likud and hopefully for Netanyahu. Because I believe that Israel is going the wrong way and we need to change the policy of this government in order to change the threats that Israel is facing, and this is what I am going to do."

After being voted out as leader of the main opposition party, Livni left parliament eight months ago.

But she now pledges to "fight for peace."

She has criticised Netanyahu for failing to reopen peace talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
