In Argentina, public transport was brought to a halt in the first general strike since President Cristina Fernandez took office five years ago.

Opposition trade unions were among those protesting over high crime, soaring inflation which is economists say is running around the 25 percent mark.

Fernandez's popularity has tumbled since she easily won re-election last year.
