U.S. President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, during a landmark whirlwind trip to Myanmar on Monday (November 19).

Obama met Suu Kyi, a fellow Nobel Peace Prize laureate, at her lakeside house in the former capital Yangon, where she was held under house arrest for several years by army generals.

The opposition leader, who led the struggle against military rule and is now a lawmaker, shook hands with Obama and warmly greeted Clinton with an embrace.

Obama said on Sunday (November 18) that his upcoming trip to Myanmar was not an endorsement of the government, but rather an acknowledgement of the progress it has made in moving towards democracy after decades of military rule.
