Fierce clashes and running battles have broken out between anti-austerity protestors and police in the Greek capital on the second day of a 48-hour nationwide strike.

The violence erupted shortly after thousands of demonstrators flooded into the main square as MPs prepared to vote on a tough new belt-tightening measures.
