16 Dead after Yunnan Landslide Buries 18 Students

At least 16 people have died in southwest China after a landslide buried a school and two houses in Yunnan province early Thursday morning. Among the buried are 18 children, according to state-run media.

The landslide came after days of heavy rain. And in an area that was recently struck by a series of earthquakes that had already claimed 80 lives.

The children were at school during an eight day national holiday, making up for classes missed during the earthquakes, state-run China News Service reported.

Another man was also buried in one of the two houses. State-run Xinhua reports a family of three managed to flee before the landslide struck.

Authorities have moved at least 800 residents to safer ground after the landslide.
