Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told students at Russia's famous Moscow State University how Facebook developed and how it would eventually conquer the Russian market on Tuesday (October 2) in a 40 minute talk that was live-streamed on Facebook's Russia page.
Zuckerberg, 28, explained how he feels about the social media site he developed as a student at Harvard.
"I really think that everyone should have a voice, and everyone should be able to share what they want and should be able to stay connected to all of the people that they want. And, I don't know, if that's like the thing that I accomplish in my life, then I will be really happy with that," Zuckerberg said.
Zuckerberg said that starting a business isn’t all fun and games.
"I don't think that you should start a company if what your primary goal is is to have the most fun. I think you should start a company if you believe in something and want to see it exists, and you're willing to go through all this pain and spend all this time to make it happen," he said.”
Zuckerberg was making his first visit to Russia after a programmer there won Facebook's Hacker Cup competition. On Monday (October 1), he met with Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev at his residence outside of Moscow.
Zuckerberg said the superiority of his product would sway Russian users to Facebook.
" Facebook has become the social media that everyone uses in Germany. So, I think that something similar is what I think might happen here, where it's not that one day people are going to choose to stop using other sites. I mean, people are going to use a lot of other sites, but what I hope is that people try out Facebook, and enjoy it and get value from it, and if you do, I think that over time you'll just spend more and more time using it," Zuckerberg said.
Moscow State University Chancellor gave Zuckerberg a small model of the university's iconic building, and the Facebook founder reciprocated with a hoodie, which elicited cheers from his students.
