Located south of Haining City is the Qiantang River where each September tidal waves from the East China Sea surge dramatically up river. This Sunday saw a rare spectacle when the tide split and then reunited at the Jiaxing-Shaoing bridge.

The roaring tide surged in a Y shape and moved across the bridge after the tides merged.

A one-line tide also surged against dikes producing "sounds of hoofs of thousands of horses in chorus" and an "unparalleled spectacle" as described by ancient Chinese poets.

Each year, thousands of tourists from around the world thrill to the sight, even more so this year with the unusual meeting of the cross tides.
