Dissolved air flotation systems have many basic components. Each has its own unique functions. Nine of the basic components include:

1. A chemical mix system, consisting of a tank or pipe flocculator, where the feed water enters and is doused with coagulants like ferric chloride and aluminum sulfate. These may be followed by cationic or anionic polymers depending upon application.
2. An air saturation system, conventionally a tank or air drum, where the water designated for treatment is introduced, in order to add compressed air and initiate the water treatment process.
3. A pressure reduction valve, which de-pressurizes the aerated water as the stream moves past it from the air drum to the flotation tank.
4. A flotation tank or vessel, where the suspended particles float to the surface and produce a layer of frothy sludge.
5. A skimmer for removing the resultant sludge.
6. Various control valves.
7. A recycle pump
8. A recycle pressure safety relief valve.
9. An outlet weir, where the water passes on the way out from the flotation tank.

Each of the basic components within a DAF System performs a critical role. In part II we will review DAF systems in greater detail.
