When you purchase a firearm you are making a commitment and taking on a responsibility. You have a commitment to society to use it appropriately, store it properly, and follow all the handgun safety rules. You are responsible for everything that happens to that gun. The first step to keeping it safe is to learn how to handle your new pistol.
The first rule is to always keep your gun pointed somewhere safe where you intend to shoot. Always treat a pistol as if it is fully loaded because accidents happen and you don’t want to be the one to make them. Always be aware of where the gun is pointing and the status of the gun. That being said; always keep a gun unloaded until you are ready to use it.
Always check which ammunition you are using. There are many kinds out there and most of them appear similar. They may also be more powerful or dangerous than you need or might ruin your gun if they aren’t the right kind of bullets.
Use the proper grip and stance when firing a gun. The way you stand, the way you pull the trigger, and the way you support the gun when firing it can greatly affect the aim and impact of recoil. Fire a gun only at what you intend to, by holding it correctly, being in full control and by being in the right stance. When you pull the trigger, roll with it; don't hesitate when pulling a trigger and do not hold it down. By rolling with the trigger you’ll fire properly and keep control of the recoil. Remember, keeping your gun stable keeps it safe.
Lastly, always wear appropriate gear when firing a gun and keep a cool head about you. Practicing in a safe environment will teach you the basics of holding, aiming and firing a pistol. Understanding the power and knowing how to control your pistol will help you maintain it safely. Last but not least, when you're not using your pistol keep it locked safely out of sight.
