South Korea celebrates Armed Forces Day on Wednesday (September 26) with a show of force.
Weeks of repeated incursions by North Korean fishing vessels over the disputed Yellow Sea border culminated in the South Korean navy firing warning shots last week to send the boats back.
In response, Pyongyang threatened military action.
The two Koreas are still technically at war and have stationed about one million troops on both sides of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that has divided the peninsula since the 1950-53 Korean War ended in an armistice, but not a peace treaty.
Around 14,000 officials, veterans and soldiers - including President Lee Myung-bak - attended the Armed Forces Day ceremony, which is usually celebrated on October 1.
